A 1960s brutalist car park in Sydney’s CBD is transformed by a cocoon. The car park is wrapped with a new high tech, sustainable, lightweight, transparent facade. The cocoon makes minimal impact on the existing structure whilst improving building performance, seamlessly integrating a dynamic media wall and providing opportunities to activate the street level.
The cellular and modular system of fabrication, installation and maintenance optimises fabrication cost, advertising opportunity and public domain interaction. The façade is easily and cost effectively reconfigured, with the media wall promoting identity and creating income from advertising. The skin combines solidity with the airiness of the fabric ‘weave’ allowing constant ventilation.
The car park roof is activated by a public garden providing function whilst improving visual amenity for surrounding residents. The street is activated with hole-in-the-wall food and retail outlets, gallery spaces, electric car recharging, bike storage and an eco-information point.
Interactive lighting systems emphasise the cocoon concept and provide public domain light sculptures. The building becomes a way-finding feature for the community and an icon for ecological technology and public information.
